Addelyn Sander has arrived

I apologize on Daddy's behalf for not updating the blog frequently yesterday.  Things went, well, rather quickly.  But before we get into the details, I had my 18 month checkup today.  I weighed in at 21 lbs and I was 32 inches tall.  That makes me above average for height but bottom 10% for weight.  Tall and skinny :)

Ok, so we all know what you really want to read about, Addie.  Here is her story...

Addie woke mommy up around 3am on June 20th.  She had been waking mommy up a lot lately so mommy didn't think much about it at first.  3:30am rolled around and mommy still couldn't sleep and realized that her "pains" were pretty regular.  She started timing them and at 4am they were about 7 minutes apart.  She decided to let daddy keep sleeping and went downstairs to walk around and see if things continued.  At around 5am they were closer to 5 1/2 minutes apart so she woke daddy up and called Grandma Heikes to come stay with me.  It looked like the show might be ready to start...

Mommy and Daddy arrived at Mercy Hospital at about 6am.  Their first nurse was kinda grumpy (coming off of the night shift) and measured mommy at only 3cm at around 7am (less than her doctor had had her for the last 2 weeks).  15 minutes later the day shift nurse came on and checked mommy but put her at 5cm.  They called mommy's doctor (at this point the contractions were also coming every 4-5 minutes) and by 8am she was admitted.  Addie was on her way!

They moved up to the 7th floor with an awesome nurse, Lizzie.  Things were very calm and Lizzie was confident that we would have this baby by lunch time.  Mommy liked that idea too because she was very hungry!  :)  At about 10:00am, mommy had reached 6cm and requested the epidural.  Things looked to be going as planned and Lizzie cranked up the pitocin to move things along.

About 11am, mommy started to feel a lot of pressure.  She hadn't experienced this with my birth so daddy called the nurse in.  Lizzie was assisting another patient so a different nurse came in.  She had mommy sit up straighter in hopes to "swish" the medicine around.  I guess gravity was supposed to help the epidural.  Well, needless to say, this didn't work and mommy's pain escalated.  Lizzie came in and did another check on mommy and guess what?  Addie was ready!  Mommy had hit 10cm and Addie was starting to descend.  Unfortunately, since it happened so quickly, the epidural was not keeping up and mommy was about to feel everything.

Mommy was very scared because she had not prepared herself to feel the birth.  If you don't know, my mommy has a "low" pain tolerance.  She disagrees, but she does.  Once she got through the first two contractions without pain medicine, daddy's hand may have been broken but she found a good breathing rhythm and was more comfortable.  Her doctor was coming from a different hospital so they had to wait on her before they could start pushing.  Lizzie had called stand by to be in the hallway just in case Addie didn't wait until Dr. Collins got there.  :)

Part of mommy's breathing rhythm was pushing the epidural button, so you can imagine where this is going.  Lizzie thinks mommy hit that button a record number of times.  Don't worry though, you can't over push it and it wasn't able to keep up anyway :)

On the first practice push, mommy's water broke all over Lizzie.  Addie's head had been blocking it so when she pushed it all came out.  When this happened, Lizzie realized that there was meconium present so she had to NICU to be on standby for Addie just in case.  Luckily, we didn't need them and this was just a precaution.

Once Dr. Collins arrived around 11:45am, mommy gave two good pushes and Addelyn Viola arrived at 11:55am.  Addie was 7lbs 1oz, 19.5" long and her head head circumference was 13".  Perfectly healthy!

I have visited the hospital twice to see Addie already.  I really want to poke her in the eyes but no one lets me.  She also makes really funny noises (my dolls at home don't make any noise).  This will take some getting used to!

For now, here are some pictures to tie you guys over until mommy and daddy get settled back into things.  Enjoy!
